Life is back to normal. After a whole series of holiday trips we have enjoyed a week back at home in Richmond. This past week has seemed incredibly long compared to the previous few what with all of our travels. We were fortunate to be able to travel to Indiana as Savannah rang in the New Year with Grandma and Grandpa Stephens. She also had the chance to spend much quality time with Uncle Jim and Aunt Andrea and Uncle Dave and Aunt Jackie. The interesting part of the story really involves getting to Grandma and Grandpa’s, not so much the time there.
Just getting to Indiana in December can be a chore. We didn’t really expect Savannah to have any problems traveling since she was a seasoned pro. The big question this time of year though is the weather. When you add to that the almost guaranteed flight delays involved with O’Hare air traffic you get a fine mess of holiday travel. On Thursday before we were to leave we got a nice computerized voicemail from American Airlines saying our Friday night flight to Fort Wayne had already been canceled (due to anticipated weather). So naturally they put us on a 6:00am flight which would have been miserable for Savannah. It turns out that spending 12 hours in airports is pretty miserable too. Long story short….we spent way too much time at O’Hare with way too many other people and by 2:00am Saturday morning we were not in Huntertown, Indiana but we were in fact in Brownsburg, IN about 2.5 hours from Grandma and Grandpa’s cozy house. The upside in all of this was that we got the chance to stay at our good friends Joe and Rachel Fugate’s new home.

The downside is that we were without luggage, would not make it to Huntertown until mid afternoon the next day, and Savannah would spend most of the night/early morning screaming. But by Saturday evening we had made it to Huntertown along with the rest of the family which only proved that it was faster to drive from Kansas to Indiana than it was to fly from Virginia to Indiana. But we were there and everyone was safe and happy (except Dixie back in North Carolina).

Grandpa reading with Savannah. Apparently "The Duck Quacks" is a page turner.
Nothing says "Happy New Year" like the game of world domination!
