Well, we did it and we survived. Kentucky Derby 141 has come and gone and we saw a little, stayed away from a lot and look forward to more adventures in year's ahead when everyone is a little bigger, better equipped to handle crowds and able to stay up a little bit later.
In Savannah there was a parade almost every month it seems. There's not quite as many parades here in Louisville but as you will see below they put on a good show, especially if you like horses.
It was cold, very windy and a little rainy at the start. Fortunately the clouds blew away and the sun came out. Once the sun was gone and temperatures dropped some more we headed home.
Since everyone and everything seems to shut down around Derby, and half the world flies into Louisville for half a day, we decided to head to the woods again. This time we explored the beautiful Bernheim Forest and Arboretum just south of Louisville. We hiked a nice trail with some good incline for the kids but just enough distance for everyone to cover.
Ellie of course took her time exploring, and being the most adorable free loader by singing her version of the song "Shoulders" while riding on my shoulder.
We were going to hike another trail but the short legged people lobbied for hanging out by one of the lakes and picking flowers in the sun. Derby weekend was absolutely beautiful and warm. I will say, when it warms up in Louisville and the big hats come out for Derby, Louisville feels distinctly more Southern than it does in mid-January (especially after just leaving Savannah).
Savannah was very excited about watching the races. Afterwards they were all outside making up their own horse names and racing tricycles in circles around the yard. We let Savannah know she should set her eyes on being a trainer rather than a jockey - she's already as tall as most of them.
The weekend ended up feeling like a de facto, long holiday weekend. We stayed busy the whole time. Judging by the days and nights the kids fell asleep before and at dinner I would say it was a successful and enjoyable weekend.
